A bride's
trousseau was the collection of possessions that a bride brought into a
marriage, which included clothing, linins, and family keepsakes. Trousseau is
the French word for bundle and this tradition started by brides bringing their
belongings wrapped in cloth. If a bride was given a large trousseau, she was
more desirable since she would have more going into the wedding to take care of
her. A large trousseau would consist with enough linins and clothing to last
the bride at least 10 years. Wedding shower gifts are a modern day trousseau.
