It is
routine to have an engagement announcement placed in local newspaper to spread
the happy news. A photograph of the couple is usually sent in along with
details of the engagement and the wedding. This was not always the customary
way to announce the engagement. In the 1800's men were hired to walk around
town and shout the news of an engagement. In those days newspapers were not as
widely spread as they are today and this was a much more effective way.
