Engagement parties were traditionally
hosted by the bride's parents, but today these parties are also hosted by other
family members, friends or themselves. The engagement party is an occasion for
family, friends, coworkers and neighbors to gather and celebrate the engagement
of the happy couple. They are held a few weeks after the couple becomes
engaged. Invitations should be sent out and should reflect how formal the party
should be. It can be as casual or as formal as the couple wants. Some popular
locations for these parties are a family or friend's home or backyard,
restaurant, beach, or country club. Food and drinks are typically served. Some
options include catering, BBQ, potluck, picnic, or luncheon at a restaurant.
The parties are usually decorated with Happy Engagement banners and balloons.
It is customary for the bride's father to ask for everyone's attention and to
announce the couple's engagement to the guests. Then the father usually toasts
the couple and wishes them a happy marriage. This is followed by a toast from
the groom to his bride. Guests are not required to bring a gift for the couple.
There are plenty of other gift giving opportunities, like the wedding shower
and actually wedding. Guests are only required to bring their lovely company
and best wishes. The engaged couple should send thank you notes and a small
gift to the people who hosted the engagement party.
